About
Thembe Mvula is the author of We That Wither Beneath, her debut prize shortlisted poetry pamphlet. As a multidisciplinary artist, Thembe works across the written word, performance and film.
Thembe has performed nationally and internationally as a performance poet, including at the Tate Modern, Oslo Afro Arts festival, Dublin Book Festival, Cheltenham literature festival and Latitude festival. Her TEDx talk on The Power of Poetry and Vulnerability has been translated into Mandarin and Cantonese.
She recently collaborated on a short film about reappropriating history, constructing identity and stories of migration to the UK. In dialogue with the works of Carrie Mae Weems, the film was screened at the Barbican Centre in the summer of 2023.
Commissions
I’m experienced at producing commissions for various purposes. From digital educational resources that use creative writing to teach children about consent and healthy relationships, to a poem responding to gallery archive materials at The Courtauld. I enjoy collaborating to develop ideas and equally love working autonomously to craft a unique piece for a brief.
Live performance poetry or readings in person or online can help mark a special occasion in a memorable way. I’ve loved sharing my work with audiences ranging from government to festival crowds. Whether as a performer, speaker or panelist, I’m always open to connecting with people through a shared love of storytelling.
Workshop Facilitation
I’ve led poetry and creative writing sessions for pupils, community groups and professionals. I’m passionate about creating a safe space for others to find and hone their creative voice. Organisations I’ve worked with include the National Literacy Trust, Black Girl Festival, Dublin Book Festival and Apples and Snakes.
